Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee gives response to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s lawsuit challenging the Uplift Harris program, the guaranteed income program, during a press conference Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at Harris County Administration Building in Houston. Harris County officials called the lawsuit by Paxton a targeted act.

The district has been a Democratic stronghold, held for decades by Sheila Jackson Lee and most recently by former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, who died March 5.

Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee submitted his bid on Saturday for the now vacant congressional seat of the late U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner. According to a Federal Election Commission document filed Saturday evening by Menefee's campaign,

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said two groups of people met up in northwest Harris County to buy a gun when during the sale, gunfire was exchanged "in what appears to be a robbery."

The Harris County Sheriff's Office says a meetup for a gun sale ended in a shooting that injured four men overnight.
